The suspense was killing.
A million thoughts flooded Chelsea’s head, one stumbling over the other making it difficult for her to actually think. Akin was just there staring at her. She couldn’t get herself to look at him. She was afraid of what she might see. Had she spoken too soon? Should she have waited for a better time to let him know how much she really wanted to be his wife? Wasn’t this what he wanted too? Or maybe she was just going crazy with thoughts over nothing. For all she knew it could be something from work he was bothered about. Maybe he had finally decided to change jobs and so could not bear the financial burden of a wedding just yet. Even then, she had never really asked for an elaborate wedding. She had very few friends and would be willing to just exchange vows in a small ceremony.
Chelsea tried to focus on the dashboard but even that was looking blurred. She placed her hand on the dashboard and her ring came into view. At least she still wore his ring… Being in this car excited her. in the midst of this craziness that one thought stood out in her mind. Akin had bought this car as a pre-wedding gift for them. That was about a year ago. Chelsea had been forced to return to Nigeria briefly because of her mother’s illness. That was the time she got the letter. The day she got to know her father was never dead. Akin had come to pick her in this car, straight from the car shop. He told her they would wed in it.
Akin took her hand.
This could be either very good or very bad. For some reasons which Akin himself discovered, Chelsea could be turned on through her hand or to be more precise, her wrist. The first time she discovered it was an erogenous zone, Akin had been absent mindedly running his thumb over the inside of her wrist as they watched a movie at his place. She must have let out an involuntary moan as she snuggled closer to him. She felt the whole of her body suddenly awaken. He must have understood her move. They were lying on the couch and she was cradled before him.
She let out a deeper moan as she felt his warm tongue replace his thumb at her wrist. She wanted to turn around but he wouldn’t let her. She squirmed as she felt light kisses on her neck as his thumb again replaced his tongue and then he cupped her breast in his hands running his thumb over her nipples as he planted more feathery kisses on the nape of her neck. With the other hand he slid under her skirt, running over her inner tie. Chelsea was shaking by the time he reached her…wet…ready.
Chelsea forced her mind to return to the present.
“We really need to talk”
Akin’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Can’t we talk inside?” Chelsea could not even recognize her own voice. If it was something as bad as she thought. She wanted to get the news in farmiliar surroundings…on her own turf.
“No, that won’t be necessary”
Chelsea silent prompt dragged on for almost a minute.
“I’m sorry Chelsea, but there can’t be a wedding…not immediately”
Chelsea should have been relieved. She had made Akin wait for six years. Surely they could wait a little longer of he needed time to sort things out with…with what though, Chelsea thought.
She took one look at his face and new what she just heard was the best part of the news.
“There is something else, isn’t it?”
Chelsea could not keep the panic out of her voice.
“Talk to me Akin, what is wrong?”
“There is someone else”
“I’m sorry Chelsea but she has a baby for me”
Chelsea felt herself falling into a deep hole of darkness as the words tumbled out of Akin’s mouth. How his moment of indiscretion some months ago had become a baby. How he couldn’t bear having a child out of wedlock. How sorry he was for everything.
The last thought on Chelsea’s mind as she blacked out was that Akin was going to wed someone else in their car.
